The European Union countries discussed a French proposal to withdraw 50 million barrels of diesel from stockpiles, along with withdrawing 50 million barrels of crude oil from the stockpiles of member states of the International Energy Agency, in an effort to increase supplies and reduce soaring fuel prices.
These discussions came amid American pressure on European countries to bring more supplies to the markets, while European countries conditioned that any agreement include a U.S. commitment to avoid imposing a unilateral ban on diesel exports.
Leaders of the Group of Seven are expected to discuss the next steps during a phone call later today.
