The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is moving to open more than 1000 megahertz of spectrum to satellite communications services, in a step aimed at expanding high-speed internet capabilities via satellites and enhancing connectivity for homes, airplanes, and ships.
New Bands for Satellite Communications
The commission explained that the proposed decision, set for a vote on September 30, will allow the use of additional spectrum in the 12.7 and 42 gigahertz bands for satellite broadband services.
The new frequencies are expected to support satellite internet services for homes, connectivity on airplanes and ships, as well as data traffic routing functions in terrestrial networks linked to satellites.
Enhancing Connectivity Between Satellites
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr stated that providing additional capabilities for links between satellites would enhance network resilience and improve connectivity for ships, airplanes, and vehicles, as well as open the door for new industrial and commercial applications relying on space technologies.
This move is part of the commission’s efforts to increase the utilization of spectrum in the satellite communications sector, amid the rapid expansion of satellite internet services.
Updating Communication Technology Rules
The commission also intends to propose an update to the rules governing Ultra-Wideband technologies, to support their use in industrial applications, vehicle technologies, and cargo tracking, in addition to electronic locks and keys, and imaging technologies used in public safety and rescue operations.
It also aims to implement reforms in the permitting processes to accelerate the establishment of modern internet infrastructure and support terrestrial and satellite communication networks.
In April, the commission eased restrictions related to power levels used in certain satellite frequencies, a move that supported satellite broadband services, estimating that more intensive use of the spectrum could yield economic benefits of about two billion dollars due to increased high-speed internet usage.
