The German car manufacturer “BMW” intends to implement a wide-ranging job reduction program that includes about 8,000 employees by the end of 2027, as part of a restructuring plan aimed at addressing the economic challenges pressuring the global automotive sector, such as slowing demand in the Chinese market and declining profits.
A company spokesperson stated: “The job reduction program will be carried out through voluntary resignations, in accordance with an agreement reached with labor unions.” He clarified that the program will continue until the end of 2027 and will primarily focus on administrative employees and new product developers, without affecting workers on production lines.
According to sources, the job cuts will encompass around 8,000 positions, the vast majority of which will be within Germany, where approximately 87,400 employees work out of the group’s total workforce of about 150,000 employees worldwide.
Increasing Pressures
This move comes weeks after BMW announced a reduction in its annual financial forecasts last June, amid continued weak demand in the Chinese market, which is one of the company’s most important markets, alongside the negative impacts resulting from tensions and conflict in the Middle East, which the company stated had greater repercussions than previously estimated.
The company currently expects a slight decline in car sales this year, along with a significant drop in profits after tax deductions, while markets are awaiting its financial results for the second quarter, scheduled to be announced on July 30, to assess the impact of these factors on the company’s performance.
Sharp Decline
The restructuring plan reflects the pressures the company faces in financial markets, as BMW’s shares have lost about 36.2% of their market value since the beginning of this year, bringing the group’s market value down to around 36 billion euros, amid investor concerns about the slowdown in luxury car sector growth and declining global demand.
Analysts believe that the company is seeking to maintain its competitiveness through cost reductions, especially with intensifying competition in the electric vehicle market and slowing sales in key markets.
