Recent figures have revealed Saudi Arabia’s expansion in sustainable financing, carbon markets, and renewable energy, with the value of the first Saudi green bonds denominated in euros, issued in 2025, reaching approximately 7.2 billion riyals as part of a dual-tranche offering, indicating the growing presence of Saudi assets linked to sustainability in global financial markets.
This was highlighted in the “Environmental Insights” report issued by the Environmental Fund, which monitors key trends in environmental sustainability and showcases the Kingdom’s efforts in developing the environmental work system.
Connecting Investors with Projects
The voluntary carbon market platform recorded the trading of over 13 million tons of carbon credits, with a total market value exceeding 348.9 million riyals. One auction alone saw the trading of more than 2.5 million tons at a price of 37.58 riyals per ton, with over 75% of the projects originating from Global South countries.
The projects linked to the platform include areas such as reforestation, methane capture, and low-carbon building materials, connecting institutional and corporate investors with documented and certified carbon credit projects.
Expansion in Energy Storage Systems
In the energy sector, the report indicated that the Kingdom has developed around 64 projects since the launch of the National Renewable Energy Program in 2017, with a total capacity of 57.5 gigawatts, distributed across 40 solar energy projects, 9 wind energy projects, and 15 energy storage projects.
The Kingdom is also expanding its battery energy storage systems to support the flexibility of the electrical grid, alongside exploring geothermal energy potential, enhancing green hydrogen production, and investing in the integration of electrical networks and research and development.
The report confirms the Kingdom’s climate targets, foremost among them reducing 278 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually by 2030, implementing over 30 initiatives within the circular carbon economy approach, and achieving net-zero by 2060.
