The monthly statistics from the Saudi Central Bank “SAMA” revealed that the total bank deposits with banks operating in Saudi Arabia rose to approximately 3.113 trillion riyals by the end of July 2026, recording an annual growth rate of 8.6%, with an increase of 245.9 billion riyals compared to about 2.867 trillion riyals in July 2025.
On a monthly basis, bank deposits decreased by about 18.5 billion riyals, or 0.6%, compared to their level of 3.132 trillion riyals in June 2026, which is the highest recorded level during the period covered by the data.
Time and Savings Deposits
The statistics showed that time and savings deposits were the main driver of annual growth, having increased by 24.6%, equivalent to about 275.9 billion riyals, reaching 1.399 trillion riyals in July 2026, compared to 1.123 trillion riyals in the same month of the previous year.
Time and savings deposits constituted about 44.9% of total bank deposits, closely approaching demand deposits, which accounted for about 46.3% of the total.
The time and savings deposits were distributed between approximately 750.1 billion riyals belonging to individuals and companies, and 649.1 billion riyals for government entities. Deposits from individuals and companies in this category recorded an annual growth rate of 20.4%, while government entity deposits increased by 29.8%.
Demand Deposits
In contrast, demand deposits reached approximately 1.440 trillion riyals by the end of July, down slightly by 0.5% compared to about 1.447 trillion riyals in July 2025.
Demand deposits belonging to individuals and companies decreased by 2.5% year-on-year, reaching 1.143 trillion riyals, while government entity deposits increased by 7.9%, recording about 296.6 billion riyals.
The value of other near-money items was about 274.3 billion riyals, reflecting an annual decline of 7.6%. This category includes deposits of residents in foreign currencies, deposits against documentary credits, outstanding transfers, and repurchase agreements executed by banks with the private sector.
Foreign currency deposits recorded about 234.9 billion riyals, down by 5.9% from their level in July 2025, while deposits against documentary credits amounted to about 29.6 billion riyals, and outstanding transfers recorded about 9.8 billion riyals.
Increase in Time and Savings Deposits
On a monthly basis, time and savings deposits increased by about 23.8 billion riyals during the past month of July; however, this increase did not compensate for the decline in other near-money items by about 34.9 billion riyals, including a decrease in foreign currency deposits by about 26.8 billion riyals and a decline in outstanding transfers by about 8.1 billion riyals.
The data indicates a continued shift in the structure of bank deposits towards time and savings deposits, as these deposits have increased by more than 182% compared to their level at the end of 2021, while the increase in demand deposits during the same period did not exceed 5.9%.
A More Stable Funding Base
The growth of time and savings deposits reflects the trend of individuals, companies, and government entities towards benefiting from banking products with returns, and it provides banks with a more stable funding base, albeit at a higher cost compared to current account deposits.
Overall, bank deposits increased by about 1.009 trillion riyals, or nearly 48%, compared to their level of 2.104 trillion riyals at the end of 2021; reflecting the ongoing expansion of the deposit base in the Saudi banking sector.
