Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem revealed that the bank is set to significantly raise its inflation forecasts during the current October, driven by the continued rise in crude oil prices and petroleum products, amid growing concerns about the persistence of inflationary pressures for a longer period.
Macklem explained during a press conference via phone from Bangkok that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the decline in oil shipments, and the damage to refining capacities have contributed to increased risks of inflation widening and persisting, noting that the bank will release its new quarterly forecasts for inflation and growth alongside its decision on interest rates on October 28.
He confirmed that the bank aims to keep the inflation rate close to 2% in the long term, while being prepared to adjust monetary policy as needed to address economic developments.
As market expectations for interest rate hikes increase during the coming year, market pricing indicates potential increases totaling 100 basis points in 2027, compared to expectations of maintaining rates during the meetings in October and December of this year.
Macklem pointed out that the global economy has shown resilience despite ongoing conflicts, but rising energy costs and tightening financial conditions pose additional challenges, noting the shrinking fiscal space available to governments and their need to adjust policies to rebuild their capacity to face crises.
