The Asilah Forum Foundation is no longer just a festive institution that attracts guests from all corners of the world; rather, it has set a date with beauty, creativity, and the arts to become a destination for cultural, intellectual, and artistic elites, and a memory that visitors and creators deposit something of their touches, snapshots, and testimonies about the city that the late Minister Mohamed Ben Issa made a meeting point for the East and West in the most splendid forms of convergence and harmony.
The President of the Asilah Forum Foundation, Hatem Battoui, and his team continue their civilizational role and national and humanitarian duty by consolidating the position of the Asilah International Cultural Season as a comprehensive intellectual and creative entity that inspires optimism for a promising future built on land blessed with pure air, where its people embody virtues, and its geography opens up to humanity; and its noble stances embrace its history.
The Secretary-General of the Asilah Forum, Hatem Battoui, confirms that the 47th session of the forum attracts 400 Arab and foreign figures, including prominent thinkers, politicians, journalists, artists, and creators from within the Kingdom of Morocco and various parts of the world, who have deepened their love for this cherished city and its forum. He explains that the autumn session of the 47th season has been launched under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication (Cultural Sector) and the Asilah Municipal Council, starting today.
It is noteworthy that the Asilah Season has contributed to a dialogical, cultural, and interactive creativity throughout its previous sessions, which has enhanced Morocco’s cultural radiance and introduced the dynamics of its cultural scene, due to the organizers’ commitment to qualitative and quantitative renewal, within the framework of continuity and preservation of the intellectual identity that has characterized this annual cultural event since its inception in 1978, considering it an unprecedented purposeful event in the non-governmental cultural field in Morocco, which has granted the distinguished periodic event renewed credibility, making it an international cultural appointment par excellence, sought after by political and cultural elites from the Arab, Moroccan, and foreign spheres; especially from the Global South and the Arab region, as it is one of the few intellectual oases in the world and particularly in the Global South, where a fertile discussion takes place among actors and idea producers regarding issues and problems that concern the essence of the current cultural and general living situation.
It is no surprise that the Asilah Season attracts attention and ignites the passions of lovers for a city said to have a spirit that is from the spirit of Morocco, as it is one of the symbols of cohesion based on “a different experience that has made Morocco an oasis of stability in North Africa and the entire continent, and a bridge between it and Europe at the same time.”
The organizers have proposed a diverse program for the autumn session, which continues from October 2 to 18, including various seminars, the signing of new publications, musical performances, exhibitions, and special events for visual arts, as well as workshops for children’s talents.
The seminars programmed for the autumn session are expected to address several topics related to the present and the future, such as “Energy and Water Challenges in Africa and Strategic Projects: Towards a New Political Geography,” and “The Arab World in Light of 2030: Challenges, Transformations, and Prospects.” Some of them will also have a celebratory and commemorative character, such as “Tony Maraini and the Moroccan Visual Scene,” and “Hassouna Mosbahi: A Journey in Expressions and Places,” in addition to “Mbarek Rabi: The Authenticity of the Writer and the Pathways of Writing” within the framework of the “Creativity Tent,” as well as the fourth poetry meeting that includes a seminar titled: “New Poets in the Arab World and Transforming Poetics: From Multiple Forms to Intermediality,” alongside the eighth session of the Blund Al-Haidari Prize for Young Arab Poets.
A special event has been allocated for signing publications, including “The Time of Quiet Transition: A Tale of Diplomatic Transition in Mauritania” by the author and former Mauritanian Prime Minister Sidi Mohamed Ould Boubacar, “Tales on the Edge of Water: Asilah, Home, Family, and Passersby” by Lebanese author and journalist Ismail Haidar, and the novel “Fabrics of Chaos” by Moroccan author and journalist Idriss Ksix.
The program of the session witnesses the organization of a variety of musical performances at the Mohammed Ben Issa Space for Culture and Arts, and in the Prince Bandar bin Sultan Library, in addition to special events for visual arts, including engraving, painting, and lithography, with the participation of artists from Arab and foreign countries, alongside the organization of a “Children’s Talent Workshop” and a “Literary Expression and Children’s Writing Workshop,” aimed at providing spaces for learning and experimentation for the youth and developing their artistic and literary abilities. Meanwhile, the Mohammed Ben Issa Fine Arts Gallery, at the Hassan II Center for International Meetings, hosts an exhibition of works by Moroccan visual artists Mohamed Al-Murabiti and Younes Al-Kharraz, and the Culture Palace hosts an exhibition of photographs of the late Mohamed Ben Issa, along with a collective exhibition of the “Season’s Talents” creations.
The Asilah Forum Foundation organized, between March 27 and April 12 of last year, the spring session of the season, which was dedicated to visual arts, and witnessed the organization of artistic workshops in engraving, lithography, and painting, with the participation of 14 artists from Morocco, Bahrain, Spain, Syria, Italy, and Britain, along with the organization of the Season’s Talent Workshop (Children’s Studio).
The summer session, which was organized between June 28 and July 5 of last year, was characterized by programs that included several segments, including the organization of a mural painting workshop in the old city, a workshop that the foundation has been organizing since 1978, and an artistic seminar on “Asilah Murals: Towards a Visual Identity for the City,” along with the opening of the exhibition “Asilah in the Shadow of Its Colors,” which included a collection of artworks by 28 artists from the city of Asilah.
Palestinian poet Walid Khazendar affirms that “Asilah” is a city that is now famous in Morocco and the world for its painted walls, as “rarely has a cultural movement influenced a city’s identity so quickly,” and the walls that were (traditionally) white have become a secret of the old town, transforming into vast fields of colors and openings to worlds of imagination, with gutters forming towers and fortresses, and the rains, waves, and winds resulting from ocean currents motivate Asilah’s lovers to move towards appointments that seasons do not miss and do not spare the dreaming fingers of a bright tomorrow filled with knowledge, belonging, and human communication.
The most vibrant and indicative evidence of the love relationship that has developed between several intellectuals, politicians, and journalists and Asilah and its cultural season is the naming of several gardens in the city after famous participants, including Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish, Sudanese novelist Tayeb Salih, Iraqi poet Blund Al-Haidari, Moroccan thinker Mohamed Abed Al-Jabri, Moroccan short story writer and poet Ahmed Abdessalam Al-Baqali, Moroccan philosopher Mohamed Aziz Al-Habbabi, and Congolese poet Chikaya Outamsi, which gives each garden name dimensions and meanings that reinforce the culture of recognition and appreciation for those who have been enchanted by this ancient city. As Tayeb Salih said about Asilah: “This magical city has penetrated my being. And undoubtedly, people will remember later, when the journey of life ends, that I was one of those who were connected to it,” while those enchanted by contributing to the cultural and artistic scene in their city strive to instill values of beauty in the generations of tomorrow.
Battoui: The Continuation of Impact and Accumulation of Achievements in Loyalty to “Ben Issa”
The Secretary-General of the Asilah Forum, Hatem Battoui, comes from the very place that embraced Asilah and prepared it to hold a special place in the hearts of writers, authors, journalists, and news agency correspondents; to solidify the foundations of a structure he saw growing with him in his youth, and he absorbed the idea from his mentor, Minister Dr. Mohamed Ben Issa, who was kind to him in his life, loyal to him after his departure, and devoted to the idea that he sees as the continuation of impact and the accumulation of experiences and achievements. Battoui confirms that Ben Issa’s cultural and civilizational project remains, and the dream he planted in Asilah is renewed and proliferates, as it sprouts a global flower in every season, pointing out that culture is a soft power capable of changing the fate of cities, noting that Mohamed Ben Issa embodied an idea, and ideas do not die. He added that the style of thinking from “Ben Issa” will remain, combining the local and the global, as he planted fruitful plants in the soil of the city, built Asilah, elevated it, and brought it out of the margins with a taste of tranquility and patience, considering it a mark that will remain a testament to a man who believed that culture creates miracles.
