Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh presented the idea of reducing the number of meetings to members of the U.S. central bank, in a move that would represent a fundamental shift in the council’s operational mechanisms.
This week, Warsh chaired his second meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, composed of 12 members, which meets in Washington eight times a year to determine interest rates and monetary policy directions.
Topic for Discussion
According to what was reported by the Wall Street Journal, Warsh proposed the idea of reducing the number of meetings as a topic for discussion rather than an official proposal, and the discussion focused on the feasibility of holding meetings six times a year.
Since taking charge, Warsh has sought to limit media appearances and to avoid hints that might attract market attention.
During the two meetings he led, the committee issued a brief statement, and afterward, Warsh declined to comment on monetary policy expectations to reporters.
Market Interest
Warsh indicated after the last meeting that he expects to continue holding a press conference after each meeting this year, but he did not specify whether this would continue afterward.
It is noteworthy that reducing the number of meetings aligns with Warsh’s approach, as it decreases the number of occasions when the Federal Reserve is the main event, which may help focus market attention rather than scatter it.
