Bitcoin prices continued their losses today, which were recorded over the weekend, dropping by 1% to reach $62,829.4.
This decline came amid challenges facing the cryptocurrency markets, most notably a major cyber breach and weak earnings results from major companies in the sector during the second quarter, overshadowing optimism about the resumption of negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Widespread Concern
In contrast, the market suffered a severe blow after a Canadian company announced a breach of its cold wallets, “Cold Card,” resulting in the theft of approximately $90 million in Bitcoin from over 4,500 wallets. This incident raised widespread concern due to the reputation of these wallets as one of the safest storage methods thanks to their usual isolation from public networks.
The grim situation was exacerbated by two companies announcing earnings results below expectations. The first incurred heavy losses due to a decline in the value of its Bitcoin holdings, while the second suffered from decreased trading volumes due to waning investor interest.
This downturn extended to alternative currencies, with Ethereum dropping by 1.2%, affected by the general aversion to risk and the shift towards assets linked to artificial intelligence.
