غيب الموت اليوم (الأربعاء) رجل الإعلام الأمريكي البارز ومؤسس شبكة CNN تيد تيرنر عن عمر ناهز 87 عاماً، بعد مسيرة صنعت تحولاً تاريخياً في صناعة الأخبار والبث التلفزيوني حول العالم.
ونعى الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب الراحل، مؤكداً أن تيرنر كان «أحد العظماء عبر التاريخ»، مشيراً إلى أن مؤسس CNN شعر بصدمة كبيرة بعد بيع الشبكة، معتبراً أن الملاك الجدد غيّروا هويتها التي آمن بها لسنوات طويلة.
وقال ترمب في منشور عبر منصة “تروث سوشال” إن الشبكة «أصبحت تتبنى الفكر الووك»، مضيفاً أن تيرنر كان يرى CNN بمثابة «طفله»، معرباً عن أمله في أن تستعيد الشبكة «مصداقيتها ومجدها السابقين».
وأضاف: «كان واحداً من أعظم الشخصيات في تاريخ البث الإعلامي، وصديقاً لي.. كلما احتجت إليه كان موجوداً ومستعداً دائماً للقتال من أجل قضية نبيلة».
«فم الجنوب».. رجل كسر قواعد الإعلام
وُلد تيرنر في ولاية أوهايو، قبل أن يصنع اسمه كرجل أعمال وإعلام بارز في مدينة Atlanta، واشتهر بلقب «فم الجنوب» بسبب صراحته الحادة ومواقفه الجريئة.
وأسس إمبراطورية إعلامية ضخمة شملت أول محطة تلفزيونية فائقة عبر الكابل، إلى جانب إطلاق قنوات متخصصة في الأفلام والرسوم المتحركة، فضلاً عن امتلاكه فرقاً رياضية محترفة، أبرزها فريق Atlanta Braves.
CNN.. الفكرة التي غيّرت العالم
ارتبط اسم تيرنر عالمياً بإطلاق شبكة CNN، التي أحدثت ثورة في مفهوم التغطية الإخبارية المباشرة على مدار الساعة، ونجحت في نقل الأحداث لحظة بلحظة إلى ملايين المشاهدين حول العالم.
وفي عام 1991 اختارته مجلة Time «رجل العام»، تقديراً لتأثيره في الإعلام العالمي وتحويل المشاهدين في أكثر من 150 دولة إلى شهود مباشرين على الأحداث التاريخية.
ورغم بيعه شبكاته لاحقاً إلى شركة Time Warner وابتعاده عن إدارة الأعمال، ظل يؤكد أن تأسيس CNN يمثل «أعظم إنجاز» في حياته.
ناشط بيئي ومناهض للأسلحة النووية
بعيداً عن الإعلام، عُرف تيرنر كبحّار محترف وناشط دولي في قضايا السلام والبيئة، إذ أسس United Nations Foundation، ودعا لسنوات إلى القضاء على الأسلحة النووية حول العالم.
كما كان من أبرز ملاك الأراضي في الولايات المتحدة، ولعب دوراً في إعادة البيسون إلى الغرب الأمريكي، إضافة إلى ابتكار مسلسل الرسوم المتحركة Captain Planet and the Planeteers بهدف توعية الأطفال بالقضايا البيئية.
سنوات المرض والنهاية
وفي عام 2018 كشف تيرنر إصابته بالخرف المصحوب بأجسام ليوي، وهو اضطراب دماغي تدريجي، قبل أن يُنقل مطلع 2025 إلى المستشفى إثر إصابته بالتهاب رئوي خفيف، ثم تعافى داخل مركز لإعادة التأهيل.
ونعت شبكة CNN مؤسسها بكلمات مؤثرة، إذ قال رئيسها التنفيذي مارك تومسون إن تيرنر «كان قائداً جريئاً لا يعرف الخوف، وسيظل الروح الحاضرة لـCNN».
ورحل تيرنر تاركاً خلفه خمسة أبناء و14 حفيداً وحفيدين من الجيل الثالث، فيما يبقى اسمه واحداً من أبرز الأسماء التي غيّرت وجه الإعلام الحديث.
Today (Wednesday), the prominent American media figure and founder of CNN, Ted Turner, passed away at the age of 87, after a career that made a historic transformation in the news and broadcasting industry worldwide.
U.S. President Donald Trump mourned the late Turner, affirming that Turner was “one of the greats throughout history,” noting that the CNN founder felt a great shock after the network was sold, considering that the new owners changed its identity, which he had believed in for many years.
Trump stated in a post on the “Truth Social” platform that the network “has adopted woke thinking,” adding that Turner saw CNN as his “child,” expressing hope that the network would regain its “credibility and former glory.”
He added: “He was one of the greatest figures in the history of broadcasting and a friend to me… Whenever I needed him, he was there and always ready to fight for a noble cause.”
“The Mouth of the South”… A Man Who Broke Media Rules
Turner was born in Ohio before making a name for himself as a prominent businessman and media figure in Atlanta, earning the nickname “The Mouth of the South” due to his sharp frankness and bold stances.
He established a massive media empire that included the first super cable television station, alongside launching specialized channels for movies and animation, as well as owning professional sports teams, most notably the Atlanta Braves.
CNN… The Idea That Changed the World
Turner’s name is globally associated with the launch of CNN, which revolutionized the concept of 24-hour live news coverage, successfully transmitting events moment by moment to millions of viewers around the world.
In 1991, Time magazine named him “Man of the Year,” in recognition of his impact on global media and transforming viewers in over 150 countries into eyewitnesses of historical events.
Despite selling his networks later to Time Warner and stepping away from business management, he continued to assert that founding CNN represented the “greatest achievement” of his life.
Environmental Activist and Anti-Nuclear Weapons Advocate
Away from media, Turner was known as a professional sailor and an international activist for peace and environmental issues, having founded the United Nations Foundation and advocated for years for the elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide.
He was also one of the prominent landowners in the United States and played a role in bringing bison back to the American West, in addition to creating the animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers to raise children’s awareness of environmental issues.
Years of Illness and the End
In 2018, Turner revealed that he was suffering from dementia with Lewy bodies, a progressive brain disorder, before being hospitalized in early 2025 due to a mild pneumonia, from which he later recovered in a rehabilitation center.
CNN mourned its founder with poignant words, as its CEO Mark Thompson stated that Turner “was a fearless bold leader and will remain the enduring spirit of CNN.”
Turner passed away leaving behind five children, 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, while his name remains one of the most prominent names that changed the face of modern media.
