The Saudi visual artist Reem Al-Dini returns to the exhibition space with a new experience titled “Pulse,” hosted by the Jeddah Atelier of Fine Arts on Tuesday, September 29, in her ninth solo exhibition, presenting 26 new works that represent the latest transformations in her artistic journey. The exhibition will be inaugurated by businessman Engineer Khalid Al-Nahdi and will continue for ten days.
“Pulse” comes as an extension of an artistic journey that Al-Dini has built gradually, during which she has accumulated a visual experience that has not stopped at the limits of producing paintings but has extended to her cultural presence and her contribution to the artistic movement through her activities and management of several art galleries in Jeddah, as well as the support she has provided to artists and the opening of spaces for exhibition, dialogue, and communication with the audience.
Al-Dini has supported her experience with a wide artistic culture and continuous exposure to art experiences in its global centers and museums, which has reflected on her visual language and her ability to transition from one phase to another without losing her old relationship with rhythm and color.
Since her first exhibition “Rhythm” in 2006, music has been present in her experience in various forms, from the movement of the body to the rhythm of color, scales, and melody. Her subsequent exhibitions included “Shadow,” “Bayati,” “Absent Space,” and “Transit,” culminating in “Harmony” in 2022, before arriving today at “Pulse.”
In the new works, Al-Dini appears more liberated in her relationship with form. The vessel and the flower appear in several paintings as visual signs that lead the eye to a broader space, before their features dissolve within color spaces that juxtapose and intersect without losing their balance. It is as if the artist starts from something familiar and then leaves the color with the task of completing the story.
The works reveal a clear inclination towards expressive abstraction, while still retaining traces of still life. Al-Dini does not present the flower as a flower with complete details, nor the vessel as a form to be replicated, but rather reduces both to a mass, a sign, and a visual memory. Here, color becomes the most present element, sometimes calm and transparent in wide spaces of yellow, white, and blue, and at other times explicit and intense in red, green, and pink, creating a rhythm within the painting between calm and explosion.
The experience also reveals an ability to manage space, as the areas that seem silent are not neutral backgrounds but part of the work’s structure, countering the dense masses and giving them a chance to breathe. In some paintings, the boundaries between objects recede to the point where the flower, the vessel, and the surroundings almost become a single fabric, while in other works, they regain some of their clarity, as if the artist is constantly moving between the visible and what remains in memory.
The naming of the exhibition as “Pulse” finds its meaning here, as movement is no longer associated with a body or a musician as in previous stages of her experience, but has shifted to within the color itself. A pulse created by the masses, their varying degrees, and the spaces of light and emptiness, making the painting appear static in its subject yet dynamic from within.
This phase confirms that Reem Al-Dini does not treat her exhibitions as repetitions of previous experiences, but rather as stations where she re-tests her tools and reshapes her vision. Thus, “Pulse” comes as a new station in the journey of an artist who has contributed through her art, culture, and activities to enriching the artistic scene in Jeddah, remaining present in the artistic movement as much as she is in front of the canvas.
Al-Dini has held eight solo exhibitions before “Pulse,” in addition to local and international participations and receiving several awards, continuing in her ninth exhibition the journey of exploration and renewal, with color remaining the thread that connects the different stages of her experience.
