Artificial intelligence is rapidly invading the world of music, producing thousands of clips in moments, to the extent that generated works now represent more than 40% of new content on listening platforms, according to specialized reports. What’s even more exciting is that many of these works achieve high quality, deceiving listeners who cannot easily distinguish between human voice and digital performance.
Although the attack on generated music was intense a year ago, attitudes have begun to change, as it has become clear that listeners themselves can no longer differentiate between human songs and those crafted by algorithms. With a flow of up to two million clips monthly, according to the platform (Deezer), the industry is moving towards regulating this reality instead of resisting it, by establishing controls that protect creators’ rights and prevent deception.
Singers Without Actual Existence
Recently, musical works by virtual singers have emerged, appearing in concerts and music videos, presenting their own songs, without the audience realizing that they are entirely digital characters. Among the names that stirred controversy are Lina Noor, Lara Hadeed, and Lara Aredo, in addition to the band (The Velvet Sundown) which achieved millions of listens before it was revealed that they do not exist in reality.
Notable Arab Experience
The virtual singer (Nain) garnered offers from major producers before her musical creator, Mohamed Shafik, announced that she is a digital character, after training her to make simple decisions, respond to messages, and share her daily life on (Instagram). Shafik confirms that he has met all legal requirements related to intellectual property before launching his project.
Despite (Deezer) launching a tool to detect the authenticity of songs, specialists doubt the ability of any technology currently to distinguish between human-generated and algorithm-generated works, especially when the human element is present in writing and melody, while algorithms handle distribution or audio processing.
Professions Threatened with Extinction
International reports, including those published by (Reuters) and (The Guardian), indicate that even experts fall into the trap of mixing human and virtual creativity, prompting major music institutions, including the academy that awards (Grammy) prizes, to work on a unified system to label works that use artificial intelligence. Musicians believe that some professions will diminish, such as voice-over and music distribution, while high-quality works will remain a blend of human talent and algorithms, as seen in prominent Arab experiences, including the works of Amr Mostafa, which combined his musical signature with artificial intelligence techniques.
Specialists point out that artificial intelligence has become an indispensable assisting tool, whether in initial distribution or generating new ideas, provided that professional musicians are behind it, capable of directing the technology and avoiding poor results, at a time when the industry is heading towards a new phase where authenticity coexists with algorithms.
