When writing is fundamentally intertwined with the fabric of life and the chemistry of the body and its desires, or is in parallel with it in the joy of speech and action, or becomes another form of creative becoming and revelation, then writing becomes a symbolic representation of life in its entirety and details, and a linguistic construction preceding the joy of speech, preceding the phase of action.
The life I mean is primarily the individual existence of the writer as they recognize through it the meaning of existence, their existence first before their existence is revealed in the existence of the other… things and beings… and lives.
When Heidegger said that “language is the house of being,” he emphasized that writing-language, however diverse its forms, levels, and aims, is nothing but a formation of the forthcoming or implied meaning, as he was analyzing the poems of the great poet Hölderlin.
I am using the same saying here to affirm that writing, for those who practice it, is like another life for them, another dwelling being constructed in the example and symbol… and imagination and free consciousness and dream and the coming.
2-
When writing is a dream realized in the imagination, it becomes the special metaphysical pleasure of the stage of becoming… the stage of realization…
When writing is realized, fulfilling for the creative self, contemplative and creative, “its goal in itself,” it becomes, in my view, like another bodily dance in absolute space and time.
Whereas “writing for others” is writing that often emerges from cognitive concern and for the sake of research knowledge, filled with information and history, not with imagination and linguistic soaring and metaphorical flight, except when it is writing for others, which is the creative critical writing that resorts to poetic metaphor itself and the parallel language in revealing the poetic knowledge of the poetic experience.
3-
So what drives the creative writer to write?
More than a need, subjective at its beginning, and perhaps it transitions thereafter to a cognitive and imaginative need that urges the recipient to share its existential anxiety and questions.
In fact, I would say that writing for me at all times is like a persistent rainstorm that the awakened soul begs for in the barren thirst with passion; however, this cognitive thirst is in a continuous generative state that never ends, and every time it is quenched, its flows and Faustian springs increase.
Writing is a state of urgent and permanent begging when the collar of isolation and loneliness tightens around the writer’s neck, prompting them to navigate its rugged paths to escape this invisible siege to the absolute horizon, flying freely over the still lake of reality, throwing it with laughter and stones of clarity.
The creatively anxious writer, like me in all my conditions, loves to live in isolation, which means to him a safe and true refuge for generating ideas, imaginations, and visions, like the French critic Julien Gracq who “never wishes to appear” and desires to remain quietly settled in his kingdom/the kingdom of literature.
When I write, I indeed feel that I am in a painful labor state with pleasure, slow and new, that does not end quickly for a text that does not want to emerge from its isolation incomplete.
I write it slowly and leave it for days to develop quietly so that I can return to it after a while; either I come to it with new linguistic fuel and crazy ideas that enhance what I have written with brilliance and distinction and enrichment, or I come to it with nothing and leave it in the cave of oblivion, remaining still in its great isolation until its time comes, and perhaps it will never come.
I tend to silent writing more than I tend to spoken words and public chatter and media appearances; thus, writing for me is nothing but a renewed isolation that springs from its deep internal isolation to its external isolation. Perhaps what Julien Gracq also said: “The true writer is the one who turns to writing instead of turning to speech” represents me perfectly in all moments of my thinking and my view of my writing experience.
4-
The paths of writing and its changing forms for me are defined in two main experiences:
The experience of (writing for the self), which I mean by creative writing—short story, or autobiography, or confessional literature and my upcoming project (writing a novel), and the experience of (writing for others), which I mean by intellectual and critical writing where in this writing intertwine bonds and elements of participation that go beyond the boundaries of the self and its imaginative and aesthetic concerns, and do not exclude it at the same time because writing for others, for me, does not only seek knowledge and information and individual, collective, and inherited history but strives to approach the analytical aesthetic spirit of the text being critiqued, whether this text is a creative achievement of another or a societal life text open to sight—and to engage with it through philosophical intellectual excavation in search of its hidden aspects, obscurities, and secrets, reconstructing them in a different achievement. Thus, writing here becomes a parallel creative act, leaving a complete feeling of cognitive and spiritual fullness.
In the contexts of the writing experience, I stood long before the phenomenon of fragmentary writing, which is an art of contemporary philosophical and contemplative discourse that Al-Nafri wrote his illuminations with, as Nietzsche practiced it, and later the Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran, who was one of its most important and capable writers in exploding a series of deep and contradictory ideas in a single line or short paragraphs that do not exceed several lines. The philosopher and literary critic Fernando Pessoa also wrote in this style, and his most famous book, (The Book of Disquiet), is one of the astonishing contemporary books that mixed philosophical contemplations with stories and autobiographical narratives in short, dense paragraphs and in a concise language that suggests more than it elaborates and states as much as it also obscures. The book itself was a literary masterpiece rich in aesthetic and philosophical ideas.
When we now contemplate the outcomes of fragmentary writing and its uses, we find it has become one of the trends of media-communicative writing, as in platforms like “Facebook” or “X” (formerly Twitter), but we see in some of them a retention of the free contemplative, philosophical, cognitive, and literary value and renewed incursions into the art of free discourse. However, much of it has slipped from its philosophical levels and applications and its individual creative concepts and its contemplative atmospheres into personal, derogatory, and oppositional writing that is filled with insults and curses in an explicit and vulgar manner.
Personally, I have tried to use this discursive art that has not exceeded the boundaries of the “Facebook” or “Twitter” platform; I found in this written content another experience for condensing speech, brevity, and compression, and even a free escape for expressing my daily opinions, contemplations, and personal views, whether on a social, political, cultural, literary, or self-revelatory level. We will find some of these fragments in the upcoming new book alongside the short, in-depth critical writings and creative texts.
