Oil prices rose during Wednesday’s trading after U.S. President Donald Trump denied his willingness to ease sanctions imposed on Iran, as Qatar intensifies its efforts to push Tehran and Washington towards talks aimed at reaching a settlement.
According to Reuters, the rise in crude prices followed a decline in the previous session, with improved oil supplies from the Middle East.
By 06:50 GMT, Brent crude futures for November delivery, which expire on Wednesday, rose by 84 cents, or 0.82%, to $103.43 per barrel, while the more active December contract increased by 19 cents to $87.59.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose by 25 cents, or 0.28%, to $89.63 per barrel.
Strong Monthly Gains
Brent crude is on track to record monthly gains of nearly 14%, its largest monthly increase since July, while West Texas Intermediate crude is set to achieve a rise of about 4%, after surpassing the $106 per barrel mark for the first time since May.
The spread between the prices of the two benchmark crudes has widened to its largest level in four months, as markets monitor the possibility of the U.S. taking measures to limit diesel exports.
If implemented, this step could lead to an increase in supply in the U.S. market, which may prompt local refineries to reduce the amounts of crude they process.
Awaiting Washington’s Position on Sanctions Against Iran
Markets are closely monitoring the U.S. administration’s stance on the sanctions imposed on Iran, especially after reports suggested that Washington might ease sanctions in exchange for specific Iranian steps regarding its nuclear program.
However, Trump denied a report published by Axios, which was based on U.S. officials, stating that he was willing to ease sanctions on Tehran and allow the release of frozen Iranian funds in exchange for Iran taking “concrete” steps regarding its nuclear program.
Sujanda Sachdeva, founder of SS WealthStreet research firm in New Delhi, stated that the ongoing uncertainty regarding the easing of sanctions and negotiations keeps the geopolitical risk premium embedded in oil prices.
She added that improved supplies may limit further price increases, but renewed supply disruptions or escalating tensions could lead to a new upward wave.
Qatar Seeks to Push Negotiations
Meanwhile, Qatar stated on Tuesday that it hopes its mediation efforts between Tehran and Washington will lead to a breakthrough in negotiations.
According to data reported by JP Morgan research, crude oil exports from Middle Eastern producers rose in September to 16.328 million barrels per day, the highest level since the war with Iran began on February 28.
The bank noted that the restoration of flows through the Saudi pipeline between the east and west raised the region’s exports to a level that is only about 11% below pre-war levels.
JP Morgan estimated that the average total oil exports over the past five days reached about 20.5 million barrels per day, equivalent to 89% of 2025 levels.
U.S. Oil Inventories Under Scrutiny
In the United States, crude oil and gasoline inventories rose last week, while distillate stocks fell, according to preliminary data from the American Petroleum Institute reported by market sources.
