The International Energy Agency predicted today that global demand for coal will rise by 1.2% in 2026, reaching 8.94 billion tons, due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The agency stated: “The disruptions affecting oil and liquefied natural gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz since the outbreak of the war between the United States and Iran have led to rising prices and encouraged increased electricity generation from coal in countries that have gas-fired power plants and backup capacity for coal-fired electricity generation.”

Concerns over oil supply disruptions

Regarding oil trading, oil prices held steady today after Brent crude surpassed the $100 per barrel mark, as traders fear further supply disruptions amid Iran and the United States exchanging their largest attacks on shipping since the conflict erupted six months ago.

Brent crude futures rose by 0.1% to $101.34 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate crude increased by 0.5% to $96.55 per barrel.
