Data from the U.S. Department of Commerce showed today that the Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (Core PCE) price index, which is favored by the Federal Reserve to measure inflation trends, rose by 3.3% year-over-year in July, in line with analysts’ expectations. On a monthly basis, the core index increased by 0.2% after seasonal adjustment.
Analysts’ Expectations
In contrast, the overall PCE index rose by 0.2% month-over-month, while it recorded 3.7% year-over-year, exceeding analysts’ expectations of 3.6%. The core inflation reading is one of the key indicators monitored by Federal Reserve officials when assessing the monetary policy path, as it excludes the more volatile food and energy prices.
In other economic data, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 1.5% in the second reading, in line with expectations. This data comes at a time when investors are awaiting a speech from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh in Jackson Hole next Friday, looking for signals regarding the interest rate path, after high inflation has kept divisions within the central bank regarding the need to raise rates.
