The workforce in the German automotive industry has fallen to its lowest level in over twenty years, as manufacturers cut costs amid intensifying competition in global markets, particularly from Chinese companies.
Official data released today (Friday) showed that the German automotive industry lost more jobs than any other industrial sector during the year ending in June.
The workforce at German automotive companies, including two leading firms, decreased by 5.8%, equivalent to 42,300 employees, reaching its lowest level since 2005.
Despite this, the automotive industry remains the second largest industrial sector in terms of the number of jobs in Germany, after the machinery and equipment sector, which had over 900,000 workers at the end of June, compared to 691,500 in the vehicle sector.
