The term “Ferritin Face” has recently spread on social media platforms, referring to a set of changes that may appear on the skin and hair when iron stores are low, such as pallor or dullness of the skin, dryness, hair loss, brittle nails, and cracking at the corners of the mouth. However, experts confirm that “Ferritin Face” is not an established medical diagnosis, but rather a beauty term that has circulated online.
Ferritin is a protein that stores iron within the body, and measuring its level in the blood is an important indicator of iron stores, not just the amount of iron available at the time of the test. When iron stores decrease, the body prioritizes essential organs, which can sometimes reflect on the skin, hair, and nails.
However, the appearance of these signs does not necessarily mean there is an iron deficiency; the same symptoms can be associated with other factors such as hormonal changes, thyroid disorders, or deficiencies in other nutrients. Therefore, experts advise against diagnosing the condition based solely on the appearance of the face, and instead recommend appropriate tests that include ferritin, iron, and other indicators to fully assess iron status.
If a deficiency is confirmed, the doctor will determine the appropriate method to replenish iron, whether through diet, supplements, or in some cases, intravenous treatment. Taking iron supplements without needing them can be harmful, so understanding the cause of the deficiency and treating it remains more important than addressing “Ferritin Face” as merely a cosmetic issue.
